How to Troubleshoot & Repair Your Computer

1. Restart Your Computer

The simplest and most effective first step.
Restarting clears temporary bugs, refreshes system memory, and fixes many basic issues automatically.

2. Identify the Problem

Check what exactly is going wrong:

  • Is the computer slow?

  • Is an app crashing?

  • Is the printer not responding?

  • Is there a network or display error?

Understanding the issue helps apply the right fix.

3. Run Windows Troubleshooters

Windows has built-in tools that fix common problems.

  • Go to Settings

  • Select SystemTroubleshoot

  • Choose Other troubleshooters
    Use the tools for:

  • Internet

  • Audio

  • Printer

  • Keyboard

  • Windows Update

They automatically detect and repair issues.

4. Check for Updates

Many problems occur due to outdated software or drivers.

  • Go to Settings → Windows Update

  • Install all available updates

  • Restart your PC

This often resolves errors, crashes, and compatibility issues.

5. Scan for Malware or Viruses

Malware can cause slow performance, pop-ups, and system errors.

  • Open Windows Security

  • Click Virus & threat protection

  • Run a Quick Scan or Full Scan

Following the prompts helps remove detected threats.

6. Check Hardware Connections

Loose or faulty hardware can cause problems.

  • Ensure cables are properly connected

  • Check mouse/keyboard/USB devices

  • Restart your router for network issues

  • Make sure printer cables or Wi-Fi connection are stable

7. Free Up Storage & Remove Junk Files

Low disk space can slow down the computer.

  • Open Settings → System → Storage

  • Delete temporary files

  • Empty Recycle Bin

  • Uninstall unused apps

This improves speed and overall performance.

8. Update or Reinstall Drivers

Drivers control how hardware works.

  • Open Device Manager

  • Right-click the problematic device

  • Select Update Driver
If issues continue, choose Uninstall Device → restart your PC.

9. Repair System Files

If system files are damaged:

  • Type cmd in search → Run as Administrator

  • Enter: sfc /scannow
This tool finds and repairs corrupted Windows files.

10. Reset or Restore Windows (If Needed)

Use this only when other methods fail.

  • Go to Settings → System → Recovery
    You can:

  • Reset your PC (keep files or remove everything)

  • Go back to a previous restore point

This returns your system to a working state.
